Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
In Gashua Local Government Area of Yobe State, religious practices are central to community life, with Islam being the predominant religion. Traditionally, religious practices were communicated and shared through face-to-face interactions, local religious leaders, and mosques. However, the rise of digital media, including social media, online video platforms, and messaging apps, has dramatically changed how religious information is disseminated. According to Adamu & Usman (2023), digital media has allowed religious messages to reach a larger audience, enabling followers to engage with religious content, sermons, and discussions online. This study explores the influence of digital media on religious practices in Gashua, particularly how online platforms affect religious education, worship practices, and the spread of religious messages.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
While digital media has opened new avenues for religious engagement and learning, it has also raised concerns about the authenticity of religious content, the potential for misinformation, and the impact of virtual engagement on traditional religious practices. In Gashua, the increasing use of digital media in religious contexts may have altered the way followers interact with their faith, attend services, and engage with religious leaders. This study seeks to explore how digital media is shaping religious practices in Gashua, examining both positive and negative effects on religious life in the community.
